Pergolas and decks Penrith
Landscaping Penrith takes jobs for pergolas and decks across the Penrith area: open pergolas, roofed pergolas that shade the alfresco, timber decking and raised decks on sloping blocks. A local landscaper we work with visits, checks where the afternoon sun hits, the levels and the ground, then agrees a clear price and what's included before any work starts.
What sets the price of a pergola or deck
The landscaper prices it at the site visit, from what they see in the yard:
- The size, and whether the pergola is open or roofed (and the roof: Colorbond, polycarbonate or insulated panel)
- The timber or boards: treated pine, a hardwood such as spotted gum or merbau, or composite
- Whether it stands on its own or is fixed to the house
- How high a deck sits, how many posts and footings it needs, and any steps or balustrade
- Gutters and a downpipe for a roofed pergola, and where that water goes
- Taking out an old pergola, deck or patio roof
- Access to the back yard
Shade where the afternoon sun hits
Penrith Lakes averages 22 days a year at or above 35 °C. On those afternoons the sun comes in low from the west, under the eaves and across the back of the house. Penrith City Council's planning rules ask for shade on west-facing walls, and the same idea works in the yard: put the pergola, or its roofed end, where the afternoon sun reaches the alfresco or the back door.
Open and roofed pergolas
- Open pergolas have timber or steel posts and rafters and no roof. They give filtered shade, which grows as a climber such as star jasmine covers the rafters, and they let the rain through.
- Roofed pergolas, often called patio roofs, carry Colorbond, polycarbonate or insulated panel over the frame. They shade the whole area and keep the rain off. The roof needs a gutter and a downpipe to the stormwater.
- Either kind can stand on its own in the yard or be fixed to the house to extend the alfresco.
For the paving under a pergola, see Paving.

Decking: timber and composite decks
A deck gives a level floor at the back door, over ground that slopes or sits low. The frame stands on posts set in concrete footings, and on Penrith's reactive clay the footings are set for ground that swells and shrinks with the weather.
- Boardstreated pine, a hardwood such as spotted gum or merbau, or composite. Hardwood needs oiling now and then to keep its colour; composite doesn't.
- Heighta deck at floor level steps straight out onto the lawn. A deck well above the ground needs a balustrade and steps down.

Pergolas and decks on a Penrith block
Older suburbs
Kingswood and St MarysMany brick veneer homes have a small concrete patio, or an old timber pergola past repair. A roofed pergola over the patio, or a deck level with the back door, gives the back of the house shade and somewhere to sit.
New estates
Jordan Springs and CaddensPenrith City Council has found that new release areas often end up with less than 10% tree canopy, and the small blocks leave little room for a shade tree. The shade often has to be built: a pergola beyond the alfresco, or a roof that extends it.
The foothills
Leonay and Emu HeightsOn a steep block, a raised deck gives a level area off the house without cutting into the slope. Where the ground needs holding back as well, see Retaining walls.
Acreage
Mulgoa and Orchard HillsIf the block is mapped as bushfire prone (Penrith's map added grassland in December 2024), that can change what a deck or pergola close to the house is built from. The landscaper checks the map for your block.

What happens after you ask
- Send your suburb, the job and a rough size, and say whether you want an open or roofed pergola, a deck, or both. You hear back within 48 hours.
- A local landscaper calls to book a visit. On site they check where the afternoon sun falls, the levels, the ground for footings, how the structure meets the house, and whether council approval is needed.
- You get a clear price and what's included, agreed before any work starts, and a time frame once they've seen the job.
Questions people ask
How much does a pergola cost in Penrith?
As a rough guide, about $8,000 to $15,000 for an open timber pergola, and about $14,000 to $25,000 with a Colorbond or polycarbonate roof (Hi-Craft Home Improvements, Emu Plains, July 2026). These are published guide figures, not a quote for your job. The size, open or roofed, the roof and the timber, whether it's fixed to the house, and the footings set your price, and the landscaper agrees it with you at the site visit, before any work starts.
How much does decking cost in Penrith?
As a rough guide, about $205 to $400 a square metre for a treated pine deck, and about $345 to $690 for merbau or spotted gum (What's The Damage?, Sydney, October 2026). These are published guide figures, not a quote for your job. The boards, how high it sits above the ground, the footings, any steps or balustrade, and access set your price, agreed at the site visit.
Do I need council approval for a pergola or deck in Penrith?
Often not for a small one, up to 25 m² and behind the front of the house. Bigger or higher ones usually need approval. The landscaper checks yours at the site visit.
Quick check: does my pergola or deck need council approval?
Answer the questions for a quick guide.
Heritage areas, bushfire-prone land and the size of the house can change the answer. The landscaper checks yours at the site visit. A guide only, not legal advice.
Which gives more shade, an open or a roofed pergola?
A roofed one. It shades the whole area and keeps the rain off. An open pergola gives filtered shade, which grows as a climber covers the rafters.
Can a pergola go over an existing patio?
Often, yes. At the site visit, the landscaper checks whether the posts can sit on the slab or need their own footings, and how the pergola meets the house.
Do deck builders need a licence in NSW?
Yes, for deck or pergola work worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. You can check a licence online or in the Service NSW app.
How long does it take to build a pergola or deck?
The landscaper gives you a time frame after the site visit, once they've seen the yard, the levels and the ground.
